Hiking Ragged Mountain in Southington CT

Took a Hike on Ragged Mountain today with Carlos,  this was a difficult and dangerous hike and I would only recommend it to experienced Hikers.  The entire hike was 6 miles round trip and took us about 4 hrs. We did stop and rest and eat so it was not all hiking..  There are the GPS stats below which is missing about 30 min of hiking and 1 mile because I paused my GPS and forgot to restart it, I hate when I do that…  There are also some pictures and a link with some more information about Ragged Mountain…. All total we climbed 1180 feet And descended 1232 feet the Max Pos. Gradient was 12.5% and the Max neg. gradient was -15.9% …. This is the total sum of all the ups and downs we did and not the total altitude of the Mt.  that was a little over 700 feet… According to the Myfitness app. on my iPhone hiking for 4 hrs with a 10 lb pack will burn 3284 calories.. WOW no wonder people hiking the Appalachian trail come out skinny on the end.  4 or 5 months of hiking would make anybody skinny… By the way I use the MotionX app for the iPhone for my GPS. It is the best GPS I have ever used and only cost 99 cents….

Hiking Cedar Ln in the Snow

OK it’s November 9, 2012 and we got almost a foot of snow yesterday in some places.  I am hiking in about 6 to 8 inches of wet snow that is melting fast..  Only saw the tracks of a couple of people hiking out here and met one guy, not too many people hike in the snow, it can be dangerous if you don’t know what you are doing…. The dogs loved it especially Duke sometimes I think he must be half Wolfe the way he acts in the woods and he will just lay right down in the snow and go to sleep he loves the cold weather for sure..  Below are the GPS stats  and some pictures of the hike.  By the way for those of you looking to lose some weight this hike burned almost 700 calories….  One hour carrying about 10 lbs pack up and down hills will burn 689 calories… This is a good cardio exercise..

Brooks Rd Reservoir Today

Hiked Brooks Rd Reservoir today. Meet Nick, a man whom  I meet on a few ocassions out here over the years. I believe he lives here in the woods, he is 65 and has been living this way since he was 40..  I have meet several other people over the years in the wood that are living in the wood for reasons I do not know. One had a  very interesting way of making his shelters.  It was a Indian style TP made with long tree branches and tarps which can be purchased at any hardware store. This TP had a wood burning stove built into it and wood pallets on the floor so the living space was not directly on the dirt floor.  It was about 20 feet high and 20 feet diameter, pretty big. I’m not sure why anyone would want to live this way but it seems there are a lot of people doing it… There labeled as homeless people but that is not exactly true, the actually chose to live this way, why I do not know…  There are some pictures and the GPS stats of this hike below.
