Hiked the Mattabassett trail from Stage Coach Rd Durham CT

Today I hike another section of the Mattabasset trail starting on Stage Coach Road in Durham CT. I was hiking south. The trail was very muddy and had been ruined by ATVs driving on the trail, they are not supposed to drive on the Mattabasset trail it is for foot traffic only but they don’t care, it’s a shame the damage they have done to the trail and vegetation on the trail.  There were a lot of Salamanders and I saw on very large centipede..  There is a link to a video of the hike and the GPS stats below.

Great Hiking Boots

Timberland PRO Men’s 6″ Hyperion Soft Toe Work Boot

I bought these boots for hiking and I have to say they are probably the best hiking boots I have every had and I have been hiking for over 30 years. It’s too bad that Timberland really does not advertise these as hikers but I think they realize it because they make them with out the steal toe which only add weight for hiking.. I have tested them on all kind of surfaces for hiking and they grip like spiderman even on wet slippery rocks they hold pretty good, loose rocky inclines and declines they hold excellent and for comfort they are excellent with a supperfeet insole under the original insole that they come with. They come in all sizes and even wide which is hard to find in a hiking boot and makes for extra room for the toes. All in All this boot is an excellent hiking boot even if Timberland does not know it. LOL

Hiked the Mattabasset Trail north off Rt 77 in North Branford CT

Today I hiked another section of the Mattabasset trail.  I parked on Rt 77 in North Branford and hiked the trail north towards Durham. The Trail goes through to Stage Coach Rd in Durham but it is over 4 mile one way so I just went to the half way point which was a little over 2 miles and turned around and headed back. The beginning of this trail is very steep and there is an alternate trail to avoid the steep section which adds about a half mile to the hike but it is not steep.  I took the alternate trail on my way down.  Below is a link to a video of my hike and the GPS stats with a map of my hike.

Hiking Mattabessatt trail North for Rt 17 in Durham CT

Today I hike the Mattabassett trail north from rt 17 Durham CT.  It was a nice hike with a gradual incline over about 1 mile to the top which was about 700 ft.  There were several vistas with excellent views. The ridge along the top was shaded with beautiful Fur Trees and there was a huge lake in the valley..  I ran into an aggressive  Black Racer Snake along the trail and caught it on video.  The dogs walked by him but I notice him just sitting very still there.  He was huge, over 6 ft long.  Black racers can be aggressive if provoked so I poked at him with my walking stick and he struck the stick with force and took off like a streak of lighting. I was not sure it was a Racer until I saw how fast it got away.   I have it on video so be sure to check out the video link below of this hike.  The GPS stats are below along with a link to the video and a link with some info about Black Racer Snakes..

Hiked the Mattabassett Trail South off Rt 68 Middlefield

Took a 3 mile hike today on the Mattabassett trail in Durham.. I started on Rt 68 In Middlefield CT. This was a little challenging at points with steep inclines and declines. At about 1.5 miles  I cam to a Vista with a great view of Wallingford and The Blue Trails shooting range was within view too.  It rained a little on this hike but not enough to really get me wet.  Click the link below to view a video of this hike.
