Hiking Tynan Park to Mt Higby 9-13-13

I hiked to the top of Mt Higby today from Tynan Park on Higby Rd in Middletown This as an easy 4 mile hike with a great view at the top..  peaceful and quiet with perfect weather.  The dogs enjoyed the hike too.. Only problem no water in the streams for the dogs but I brought some water for them so no problem, I was expecting there to be no water in the streams.. The total change in altitude was 554 feet but I actually ascended 877 feet and descended 917 feet with 11.1% max pos grade and -8.4% max negative grade.  There are some pictures, a video and the GPS stats below..

Spicebush Swallowtail Caterpillar Identification

This is a cool caterpillar with fake snake eyes. The effect is even better when it sticks out its “osmeterium,” a red, forked organ that it can stick out from behind its head when it’s feeling bothered. The osmeterium looks a lot like the forked tongue of a snake, and it also smells bad. Pretty good defense for an otherwise tasty caterpillar! This one turns into the big, beautiful spicebush swallowtail.
